My work in education has taken me to so many amazing places- from teaching 2nd and 3rd graders, to coaching dedicated elementary teachers in all areas of literacy instruction, to supporting kindergarteners and first graders as a reading specialist, to helping administrators learn how workshop works… it has been quite the journey! Currently, I am fortunate to spend my school days with an incredible group of fifth graders.
In addition to my work as a classroom teacher, I also create and provide professional development sessions and workshops focused on literacy education. Working with teachers and administrators to help them grow their reading and writing workshops is one of my favorite ways to spend time. My first book, cowritten with Kari Yates, about conferring in the elementary classroom: To Know and Nurture a Reader: Conferring with Confidence and Joy is now available from Stenhouse Publishers. In addition to our book, Kari and I also have a blog of the same title to support teachers in all of their reading instruction efforts. Literacy education is not a job for me, it truly is my path, my purpose, and my passion.
Outside of the world of education, my time is spent writing, reading, cycling, running, cooking, and generally enjoying a healthy lifestyle in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area.
